Senior High Youth

Senior High Youth or SHY is Hope Lutheran Church’s programs for Senior High Youths, members of the church from 9th through 12th grades.

Mission

Our youth are marked with the cross of Christ forever—they are claimed, gathered, and sent for the sake of the world. SHY strives to maintain and build our youth members’ relationship with Jesus Christ through their teenage years—to help them keep their faith in Jesus and to guide and comfort them when they are in need, by showing them how Jesus works in all of us through generous actions of care and love within relationships.

30 Hour Famine

Each year, Hope’s SHY group spends 30 hours of fasting to raise money for World Vision. During the event, we:

  • Sleep in cardboard homes
  • Package food for Kids Against Hunger
  • Collect food for the Milton Food Pantry
  • Sponsor a child for Good Samaritan
  • Light Candle Lanterns and pray for starving kids

Other Activities

The other SHY activities include:

  • Mission trips (week-long missions to help needed communities in the United States)
  • Movie night (faith-building movies to enrich belief in Jesus)
  • Full-day skiing and Sledding trip at a ski hill in Wisconsin
  • Fund-raising volunteer events, including a “soup-er-bowl” luncheon, rummage sales, fence painting
  • A summer pool party for the youth group with friends and family
  • Serving food at GIFTS Men’s Shelter in Janesville
  • A Skelly’s Corn Maze Pumpkin Farm event for youths with family and friends
  • Visits to Valley of the Kings, a shelter for older lions and tigers
  • A visit Ronald McDonald House for kids, to decorate and fill lunch bags
  • Operation Christmas Child, to package gift boxes for kids in third-world countries
  • Visits to our local senior centers to play cards and for Christmas caroling
  • Volunteer events work towards school “Silver Cord” hours of community service
